Chapter 28

Healing

Once outside the Tower I climb onto Tadoq’s back, facedown as usual, and we are off. I look down and see Sharoth climbing onto Chelei’a’s back. The slight frown on Sharoth’s face tells me that, while grateful for the ride, she misses the independence that her Pegasus gave her.

Tadoq’s flight seems more like a dance, almost like a restful prayer. It feels as if we are gliding smoothly through the air, even when the wind picks up. I grow more and more relaxed. She starts singing. It is not a tune with discernible rhythm or meter, and I can’t recognize any of the words. Her haunting alto tones fill me with a peace I can’t explain.

I drift off to sleep, hearing her melody the whole time. When I awaken, she has stopped singing and is circling about in front of Meroth’s and Zaroth’s place. She must have felt me move, as she says, “Is it all right if I land now?”

“Yes,” I reply, “how long was I out?”

“About fifteen minutes,” she answers, “and the baby was asleep, too. I knew it would take some time to set up the room for you, so I just let both of you rest. You’ll need your strength.”

We land, and I stand up, rejuvenated. Once we enter Meroth’s and Zaroth’s Tadoq helps me set up an app on my phone that lets me access confidential medical records by having the client consent via fingerprint.

Chelei’a is my first massage and already waiting for me. I wash my hands in the restroom and enter the guest room. There is a chest of drawers in the far corner with a couple bottles of oil on top. No one could have prepared me for what I see in the middle of the room. In traditional European massage, the client lies between two sheets on a table. There is a face cradle at the head of the table on which the client places the head when face-down. In this room stands another wonder that reminds me that I am truly in another world. There are two metal plates, about the size of a human body, one on the ceiling, and one on the floor. Between the hovers a ball of pale, indigo light, in diameter about the height of a human. I see nothing past the outer edge of the bubble except two or three green feathers which I assume belong to Chelei’a who must be inside the light.

“Uh, how exactly do I do this?” I ask sheepishly.

“Follow my voice.” She replies, “I’m hovering in the air, perfectly balanced and positioned, face-up, for you, with my wings curled under my back, at least, for the moment. I am totally naked, but you’ll never see my body in this light, and the energy field is stronger around the areas on me you won’t be touching, and it will keep you from accidentally bumping anything you shouldn’t touch, which would probably be especially helpful to know when you have a male client.
